P7 Evaluations

I created a 3D golf game with a tropical/pirate theme that has 3 levels, with my game I decided to make it challenging but simple and sort of trial and error with the gameplay since with it being pirate themed I wanted it to be a bit adventurous in a sense by having a clear path to the hole but not making it completely obvious to the player where they needed to go. I wanted a consistent graphic style to be present throughout my game and to have good sound design present that would help with my games environments.

One of the strengths of my game is the theme as its quite unique since its not a common theme for a mini golf course and I managed to keep it present throughout my project even in smaller details like the fonts I used in my games UI and itch page, when I received my feedback players seemed to really like the theme as most gave it a 4 or 5 out of 5 for its theming and some even specifically mentioned in in the final comments area of my feedback. Another one of my strengths was the sound as while I was not able to add in every sound I had planned to add I managed to get the core ones implemented and it worked really well as the music and ambience added a lot to the environment of each level such as waves from the ocean in the first level or the jungle noises in the second, once again players seemed to like my sound design as I got most gave it a 3 out of 5 which I am quite happy with given how little sound my game actually featured especially when compared to my previous games. Lastly my graphics are a strength of my game as I believe my game looks quite nice since I think the simplistic look of everything is nice to look at and most of the assets work really well together which given that I used a variety of asset packs was quite surprising and even the ones that didn’t really work together still didn’t really look partially out of place either such as things like the pirate ship or town, once again players seemed to also like it as in my feedback I received mostly scores of 3 or 4 for my graphics and in the final comments a few people complimented the graphics.

One of the weaknesses of my game is the additional mechanics as for varies reasons I was unable to really add anything that changes the core gameplay hence why I did so with other methods such as the camera angle and level design, the lack of any additional mechanics didn’t really bring my game in quality down but would have definitely helped make it better since it would have made it a more unique experience and I could have been quite creative with what I added due to my games theme for example as mentioned in my planning I wanted an earthquake to happen in my cave level where debris would fall that would be a fun and challenging obstacle, this is seen in my feedback since I received scores of 1, 2 and 3 which was to be expected. Another weakness was my camera angel as looking while I wanted it to be different which was a big risk that unfortunately didn’t really pay off and help make my game a bit more challenging which it did I could have definitely experimented a bit more and found something better than what I settled on, this can be seen in my feedback as a few people mentioned that they didn’t like the camera angle due to it being restrictive.

During the course of this project I have learnt many things since it is my first time creating a game in a 3D environment such as the basics of unity like how audio works or parents and children work, I have also learnt basic skills in modelling using maya and have improved my presentation and problem solving skills since we focused on those area’s more than previous projects. I believe I did many things well during this project one of which being my schedule as I was able to stay on track for the entire project despite not being able to estimate the time needed to complete each areas of production as well as last year due to lack of experience with 3D production, another area I believe I did well in was the problem solving as while to my surprise I didn’t have many problems the few I did come across I managed to fix quite easily such as the lighting issue I encounters with my main menu, Lastly I also think I did quite well with my itch page presentation as while its not the best it could have been given the timespan I had left to do so in I believe it came out well. For my next project there are some areas that I wish to improve upon such as the presentation as I will give myself more time so that I can put more detail and thought into it than I was able to this time, another area I wish to improve upon is my modelling skills as currently I am not partially good at it hence why I chose a simple object to make myself but hopefully I will be confident enough to be able to create something a bit more complex myself next time to help me improve and lastly since in the next project I should be learning how to use bolt which will allow to to create some of the scripts myself I hope to make the most of this by creating some of the scripts myself even if its only something simple. Lastly this project for varies reasons such as time restrictions and lack of skills I was unable to really add any additional mechanics so next time I would like to be able to do that to make my game even more unique.

Overall I believe that this has been I pretty successful project since I have developed my existing skills and learnt new ones, I also achieved what I set out to do for my game and lastly I didn’t really have any major issues with this project as I enjoyed all aspects of it and found all the tasks I needed to do to be completable with my given time and skills.
